The Gamma

Kelly has worked with many great shapers throughout his life, refining an array of different shapes, and it’s all been distilled into the Gamma: a shortboard designed for rapid speed and quick direction changes in varying conditions.

This shape came from Kelly’s enthusiasm for CAD design, modifying variables, and testing, retesting, testing again, and then landing on his favorite all around shape. But Kelly is quick to mention that this was more than just him in the lab alone, “Thanks to all my friends who have been riding them and giving feedback,” he says. “This one has definitely been a group effort.”

When you view the Gamma’s outline for the first time, a hip is immediately noticeable. This enables a tight turning radius, allowing Kelly (and everyone else) to surf this shape two different ways: short and wide, or long and narrow.

That’s why we’ve given everyone the choice between High Performance dimensions and Groveler dimensions.

This board has a single concave through nearly the entire hull, with a slight vee happening behind the thruster box. So, the Gamma will excel most for surfers who favor big, forceful movements on rail, and maneuvers commonly associated with power surfing.

Helium Technology

It’s Firewire’s lightest surfboard ever, shaped from a 0.8 pound EPS faom blank with flex controlled at the rails similar to Timbertek. When describing Helium compared to LFT in his Gamma shape, Kelly Slater says “On a typical day to day, especially in beach breaks, I would be on this.

When the Helium released for the first time in 2017 Firewire was most excited by its weight and flex characteristics. But since then surfers everywhere have come to love Helium for reasons different than what we expected, most notably its durability. Firewire reported many surfers remark that the deck of their Helium shape often looks new even after a month of surfing because of what’s come to be call ‘memory’ in Helium’s deckskin – it can rebound to form after being compressed beneath your feet. For example, it’s common for a surfer who rides Helium to feel their foot sink into the deck when loading up turns. But when wax is removed post-session, the footwells often aren’t there.

Because of this many Firewire grovelers are often built in Helium, like the Chumlee and Baked Potato because it’s groveler shapes that have traditionally endured the most deck beatings across all of surfing, as surfers jump up and down on them to get past fat sections, generate speed, etc.
