Throwback Thursday: Guide to Smart Surfing – A Look Back at 1997
This #ThrowbackThursday, we’re rewinding to November 3, 1997, when the local paper featured Bruce Struck, the original owner of Spunky’s Surf Shop. Bruce was more than a shop owner; he was a seasoned surfer, mentor, and advocate for "Smart Surfing."
In the late '90s, surfing was booming, and Bruce made it his mission to educate surfers on the importance of understanding the ocean, respecting its power, and staying safe. He didn’t shy away from discussing the dangers of surfing, including shark attacks, and offered practical tips to minimize risks.
Bruce’s wisdom still resonates today, reminding us that surfing is about freedom, thrill, and a mindful approach. So, here’s to Bruce and all the surfers who ride with respect! If you’re worried about paddling out, swing by the shop to check out our shark repellents for some extra peace of mind.

Throwback Thursday: A Glimpse into Fort Pierce, October 1966
Fort Pierce has always held a special place in the hearts of Floridians, and every so often, a photograph surfaces that transports us back to simpler times when the surf was just as sweet. Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to October 1966, thanks to a stunning photo from the archives of Jim Strange.
This image is a true time capsule, capturing the essence of mid-60s Fort Pierce. With beachgoers lounging on the sand, classic cars lining the shoreline, and surfboards that have clearly seen some action, the photo evokes a warm sense of nostalgia. It was an era when surfing was more about style and grace than the aggressive maneuvers we see today—a golden age for surf culture in Fort Pierce.

Throwback Thursday: Drew Brophy & Spunky's Surf Shop
During one of his trips along the East Coast, renowned surf artist Drew Brophy made a memorable stop in Florida and was thoroughly impressed with what Spunky had achieved with the surf shop. The logo of Spunky's, reminiscent of the wave once used for the "Save the Beaches" banner, caught Drew's eye.
While visiting, Drew painted the distinctive wave design on a surfboard, capturing the essence of his experience at Spunky's Surf Shop. This wasn't just any stop on his tour—it was a special visit where he connected with the local surf community, met wonderful people, went surfing, and left a lasting impression with his art.

One More Wave July Beach Meet Up
This past weekend, we had a fantastic turnout at the Fort Pierce North Jetty for our monthly One More Wave meet-up. The sun was shining, the waves were perfect little summer swells, and the beach was buzzing with energy. A bunch of great people came out to show support, share stories, ride the waves, and fill the morning with laughter and camaraderie.
One More Wave's mission is close to our hearts. They provide wounded and disabled veterans with customized surfing equipment and a supportive community to surf with. By equipping veterans and connecting them to a global network of surfing volunteers, One More Wave empowers them to heal through surf therapy from coast to coast.
