Throwback Thursday: A Glimpse into Fort Pierce, October 1966
Fort Pierce has always held a special place in the hearts of Floridians, and every so often, a photograph surfaces that transports us back to simpler times when the surf was just as sweet. Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to October 1966, thanks to a stunning photo from the archives of Jim Strange.
This image is a true time capsule, capturing the essence of mid-60s Fort Pierce. With beachgoers lounging on the sand, classic cars lining the shoreline, and surfboards that have clearly seen some action, the photo evokes a warm sense of nostalgia. It was an era when surfing was more about style and grace than the aggressive maneuvers we see today—a golden age for surf culture in Fort Pierce.

Throwback Thursday: Drew Brophy & Spunky's Surf Shop
During one of his trips along the East Coast, renowned surf artist Drew Brophy made a memorable stop in Florida and was thoroughly impressed with what Spunky had achieved with the surf shop. The logo of Spunky's, reminiscent of the wave once used for the "Save the Beaches" banner, caught Drew's eye.
While visiting, Drew painted the distinctive wave design on a surfboard, capturing the essence of his experience at Spunky's Surf Shop. This wasn't just any stop on his tour—it was a special visit where he connected with the local surf community, met wonderful people, went surfing, and left a lasting impression with his art.
